STD Gonorrhea Information
Gonorrhea sometimes mistaken for the clap (Chlamydia) isn't really an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) but actually an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection). It's caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae which lives in the sexual organs including the urethra and reproductive tracks of both men and women.
Gonorrhea has one of the highest infection rates. In the USA It's estimated that almost one million people a year are infected with this STD. The most effected are young adults and teens mostly because of there high promiscuity rate between them.
Like most STDs and STDs it is contracted through sexual contact. Including coming in contact with the penis, vagina, anus, and even the mouth and throat. It is very easily transmitted from one person to another, which is why Gonorrhea has such a high rate of infection. On top of that the new strains of Gonorrhea are becoming increasingly harder to treat as they are adapting to the antibiotics used to treat them.
Gonorrhea Symptoms Do I Have Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea symptoms are generally mild to non existent. When there are symptoms of Gonorrhea they will usually become noticeable between 5 and 30 days and differ slightly between men and women. Since gonorrhea lives in the sexual organs and in the throat these are the primary places to be aware of when wondering if you have gonorrhea symptoms.
Gonorrhea Symptoms In Men Include:
- Burning Sensation When Urinating.
- Yellowish White Discharge From The Penis.
- Painful Or Swollen Testicles.
- A Sore Throat.
Gonorrhea Symptoms In Women Include:
- Burning Sensation When Urinating.
- Yellowish vaginal Discharge.
- Vaginal Bleeding.
- Painful Bowel Movements.
Gonorrhea Symptoms with the anus are the same between men and women and include:
- Itching and Burning sensation.
- Yellowish Discharge.
- Bleeding.
- A Sore Throat.
Gonorrhea Infection Prevention and Risk Reduction:
- Abstinence from sex is the best form of prevention.
- Using latex condoms from start to finish every time you have oral, vaginal or anal sex.
- Having sex with only one uninfected partner whom only has sex with you (mutual monogamy).
- Water-based spermicides can be used along with latex condoms for additional protection during vaginal intercourse. Use of spermicide is not recommended nor found to be effective for oral or anal intercourse.
- Have regular check-ups if you are sexually active.
- If you have an STD, don't have sex (oral, vaginal, anal) until all partners have been treated.
- Prompt, qualified and appropriate medical intervention, treatment and follow-up are important steps in breaking the disease cycle.
- Know your partner(s). Careful consideration and open communication between partners may protect all partners involved from infection.
Tests for Gonorrhea
The most positive way to know if you have Gonorrhea is to be tested. There is a urine test offered by Private Diagnostics that can tell you for sure if you have Gonorrhea. You may have been exposed to Gonorrhea and carry it for a long time without experiencing any of the symptoms above. Sometimes, the only way that you know that you have Gonorrhea is if your partner is diagnosed with it. So, again, the best way is to be tested.
Treatment of gonorrhea
