Genital Warts
Genital warts (or Condylomata acuminata, venereal warts, anal warts and anogenital warts) is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease caused by some sub-types of human papillomavirus (HPV).
Genital warts are flesh-colored or gray growths found in the genital area and anal region in both men and women.
It is spread through direct skin-to-skin contact during oral, genital, or anal sex with an infected partner.
Genital warts affect both men and women and can occur at any age.
Most patients with genital warts are between the ages of 17-33 years. Genital warts are highly contagious. There is around a 60% risk of getting the infection from a single sexual contact with someone who has genital warts.
Whilst of those infected with genital HPV it is estimated that only a "small percentage" (between 1% and 5%) develop genital warts, those infected can still transmit the virus. Other types of HPV also cause cervical cancer and probably most anal cancers, however it is important to underline that the types of HPV that cause the overwhelming majority of genital warts are not the same as those that can potentially increase the risk of genital or anal cancer.
Although genital warts are painless, they may be bothersome because of their location, size, or due to itching.
You can’t get genital warts from hugging, sharing baths or towels, from swimming pools, toilet seats, cups or cutlery.
Symptoms
Genital warts are usually painless and do not pose a serious threat to a person’s health. However, they can appear unsightly and cause psychological distress.
In Men:
genital warts can infect the urethra, penis, scrotum, and rectal area. The warts can appear as soft, raised masses with a surface that can be smooth (on the penile shaft) or rough with many fingerlike projections (anal warts). Others may appear pearly, cauliflower-like, or rough with a slightly dark surface. Most lesions are raised, but some may be flat with only slight elevation above the skin surface. Sometimes lesions may be hidden by hair or in the inner aspect of the uncircumcised foreskin in males.
In Women:
genital warts have a similar appearance and usually occur in the moist areas of the labia minora and vaginal opening. Lesions visible on the outer genitals warrant a thorough examination of the vaginal canal, cervix, and anorectal area. Most vaginal warts occur without symptoms. Rarely, women may experience bleeding after sexual intercourse, itching, or vaginal discharge.
Prevention
- Using condoms (male or female) and/or microbicide every time you have vaginal or anal sex is the most effective way to avoid getting genital warts, other than being celibate (not having sex) or getting vaccinated.
- A dental dam, which is a latex or polyurethane (plastic) square, can be used to cover the anal area or female genitals.
- Avoid sharing sex toys. However, if you do share them, wash them or cover them with a new condom before anyone else uses them.
- Vaccine - The vaccine is estimated to be 99% effective in preventing genital warts in young men and women. However, after being vaccinated, it is thought that a person’s immunity will gradually start to reduce after six years.
While vaccination does provide a very good level of protection against genital warts, it does not protect against other STIs. Therefore, the procedure should not be seen as a substitute for using a condom and/or microbicide.
Treatment
There are a range of treatments for visible warts depending on where and how many warts there are, including:
- Special cream or liquid put onto the warts. This can be done at the clinic or at home. Do not use wart preparations that you can buy from the pharmacy, these will not work on genital warts.
- Heat treatment to burn them off, freezing them or using a laser.
- Surgery to remove them.
- Injecting a drug directly into the wart - this is less common.
The treatments can be uncomfortable but should not be painful.
If you are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, tell the doctor so they can choose a treatment that won’t be harmful to the developing baby.
Although the treatment is simple it may have to be repeated several times as warts can be stubborn. As the virus cannot be removed completely from the body, warts may recur.
If left untreated, warts may disappear, stay the same or grow larger in size or number. They remain infectious.

ReplyDeleteIt took almost one year for my first real outbreak but it was the hardest thing in the world to get along with. I felt so unwanted and dirty. I am deeply concerned about the still increase in population of people living with HSV, HIV, CANCERS, HEPATITIS, STROKES in our society today because of ignorance, to be Frank all this big names are grammars. I saw comments of people DR UTU helped get rid of their diseases, with the increase in population of people living with various diseases and myself as a beneficiary to DR UTU traditional cure I thought I too should reach the world via comment. My boyfriend and I met three years ago on herpes dating site so we discovered we are +ve from the beginning of our relationship, that we both had genital herpes.
